What were common characteristics of the geographic regions where civilizations first rose? Why were these characteristics important?

What were common characteristics of the geographic regions where civilizations first rose?
Proximity to great rivers. These rivers would flood every spring bringing new soil to the basin. So the river basin was fertile every growing season . Also, the rivers were permanent sources of fresh drinking water that allowed the formation of the city-states. The formation of these city-states are seen as the beginning of "civilization."

Reply:Wild grain was very common, a variety of domesicatable animals was also available.


Civilizations arise because the people have access to domesicatable animals and plants. Those areas that did not develop cities had no chance to do so, because they had no plants or animals to use to develop extra food supplies to allow craftsmen to specialize.
